Potable, Non-Potable & Process-Water Testing

Biotrax provides microbiological and selected chemistry testing for potable, non-potable—including wastewater—and process-water samples. The appropriate analysis depends on where the water comes from, how it is used, the testing objective, and whether a specific method or NYS ELAP-certified result is required.


Contact Biotrax before collection if the required method, container, volume, preservation, holding time, or delivery requirements have not already been confirmed.

IMPORTANT: Biotrax maintains NYS ELAP certification for specific microbiological analyses in potable and non-potable water. Certification applies only to the analyte-and-method combinations listed on the current certificates. Other available or coordinated analyses may fall outside that scope. Review the current certificates or contact Biotrax before collection.

WHICH TYPE OF WATER ARE YOU TESTING?

The appropriate testing path depends on the type of water and the question the testing needs to answer. Use these categories as a starting point.

POTABLE WATER

Potable water is intended for drinking, food preparation, or another use requiring potable-quality water. Testing may support routine monitoring, investigations, and applicable customer, internal, or regulatory requirements.


Tell us the water source, sampling location, testing objective, and whether an NYS ELAP-certified result or specified method is required.

NON-POTABLE WATER

Non-potable water is not intended for drinking and may include wastewater, influent, effluent, and other operational or environmental water.


Testing may support treatment or process monitoring, investigations, and applicable customer, operational, discharge, or regulatory requirements. Tell us the water source, treatment stage, sampling location, testing objective, and required certification or method.

PROCESS WATER

Process water may be used during manufacturing, formulation, cleaning, rinsing, cooling, or other operational activities. Testing may support process monitoring, investigations, troubleshooting, internal quality programs, and applicable customer or operational specifications.


Process water may be potable or non-potable depending on its source and intended use. Tell us where it comes from, how it is used, whether it contacts products, packaging, equipment, or food-contact surfaces, and what the testing needs to determine.

NYS ELAP-CERTIFIED WATER MICROBIOLOGY

The analyses below are included under Biotrax’s NYS ELAP scope only when performed using the analyte-and-method combinations listed on the applicable current certificate. Confirm the water category, required method, container, sample volume, holding time, and certification requirement before collection.

Total Coliform & E. coli (Qualitative)

IMPORTANT: NYS ELAP scope—Potable water.  


Biotrax is approved for qualitative Total Coliform and E. coli analysis using the method listed on its current potable-water certificate. Total coliforms are indicators of water-system integrity and possible pathways for contamination. E. coli is a more specific indicator of fecal contamination.


Biotrax uses the applicable IDEXX chromogenic method identified on the current certificate.

E. COLI ENUMERATION

IMPORTANT: NYS ELAP scope—Potable water testing.  


Biotrax is approved for E. coli enumeration using the method listed on its current potable-water certificate. Enumeration provides a numerical estimate rather than a qualitative detected or not-detected result.


This analysis may be appropriate when a program, investigation, or specification requires a quantitative result. Confirm the required method and reporting units before collection. The NYS ELAP certification stated here applies only to the potable-water analyte-and-method combination shown on the current certificate.

HETEROTROPHIC PLATE COUNT

IMPORTANT: NYS ELAP scope—Potable and non-potable water.  


Biotrax is approved for Heterotrophic Plate Count using the category-specific methods listed on its current certificates. HPC estimates the general population of viable heterotrophic bacteria in a water sample.


Results may help clients monitor general microbial conditions, compare sampling locations, evaluate changes over time, or investigate a water-system concern. HPC does not replace Total Coliform or E. coli testing when those organisms are the concern.

Fecal Coliform

IMPORTANT: NYS ELAP scope—Non-potable water testing.  


Biotrax is approved for fecal-coliform analysis using the method listed on its current non-potable-water certificate. Fecal-coliform testing evaluates a group of indicator bacteria associated with fecal contamination.


Testing may support applicable wastewater, treatment-system, environmental, or other non-potable-water programs. Confirm the required method and certification status before collection.

Additional Water Microbiology

Biotrax also offers selected water-microbiology services for applicable process monitoring, internal quality programs, trending, and investigations. These services are separate from the NYS ELAP-certified analyses listed above.

General Aerobic Microorganisms

Aerobic plate count may assist in evaluating or trending the general population of viable aerobic microorganisms in an applicable water sample. Results are most meaningful when compared with an established specification or historical data from the same system. 

Yeast and Mold

Yeast-and-mold testing evaluates viable fungal organisms in an applicable water sample. Testing may support investigations or trending involving process-water systems, manufacturing operations, or facilities where fungal growth may affect products, processes, or equipment.


The significance of a result depends on the water system, intended use, historical data, and applicable specifications.

Process-Water Membrane Filtration

Selected membrane-filtration analyses may be available for applicable process-water samples. The method concentrates microorganisms from a measured sample volume for enumeration.


IMPORTANT: Biotrax’s process-water membrane-filtration services are not included in its NYS ELAP-certified potable- or non-potable-water scope. Contact Biotrax before collection to confirm the available organism and method, reporting units, sample volume, container, and holding time.

SELECTED WATER CHEMISTRY

Biotrax provides or coordinates selected water-chemistry analyses based on the water type, intended use, required method, and testing objective. Testing may support process monitoring, investigations, troubleshooting, and applicable customer, internal, or regulatory requirements.


IMPORTANT: If an ELAP-certified result or specified method is required, contact Biotrax before collection. Certification status, submission requirements, and whether an analysis is performed in-house or coordinated through a qualified partner laboratory must be confirmed for the specific request.

pH

Biotrax performs pH analysis in-house. pH indicates how acidic or alkaline a water sample is.


Results may support evaluation of treatment conditions, corrosion or scaling, cleaning and sanitation programs, equipment performance, product formulation, or other process requirements. The appropriate range depends on the water source, intended use, and applicable specification.


IMPORTANT: pH is not listed on Biotrax’s current NYS ELAP potable- or non-potable-water certificates.

NITRATE & NITRITE

Nitrate and nitrite analysis is coordinated through a qualified partner laboratory. Testing may support water-quality investigations, environmental or agricultural concerns, treatment-system evaluation, customer or internal specifications, or applicable drinking-water requirements.

LEAD

Lead analysis is coordinated through a qualified partner laboratory. Lead may enter water through plumbing materials, fixtures, solder, service lines, or source-water contamination.


The collection procedure affects what the result represents. First-draw, flushed, source, and point-of-use samples may provide different information.

BEFORE COLLECTING OR SUBMITTING YOUR WATER SAMPLE

Water-testing methods may require a specific container, sample volume, preservation, temperature, collection procedure, holding time, and delivery timeframe. Confirming these requirements before collection can help prevent a sample from becoming unsuitable for the requested analysis.


Requirements may include:


- A sterile or preserved sample container.

- A minimum sample volume.

- Method-specific collection instructions.

- Temperature control.

- Protection from outside contamination.

- A defined holding time.

- Delivery to the laboratory within a specific timeframe.

- Accurate documentation of the location and collection time.


Microbiology samples typically need at least 100 milliliters, although the exact amount may vary depending on the specific analysis and the number of tests requested. Process-water membrane-filtration methods might necessitate a different or larger sample volume.

VIEW WATER SUBMITTAL RESOURCES

WHAT A WATER RESULT CAN AND CANNOT TELL YOU

A water result applies to the submitted sample collected from a specific location at a specific time.


A not-detected microbiological result means the target organism was not detected in the tested volume under the conditions of the method. It does not prove that an entire water source, plumbing system, process line, or facility is free from contamination.


Water quality may vary based on sampling location, collection time, water use or stagnation, seasonal conditions, treatment performance, plumbing and distribution conditions, maintenance activity, production schedules, and collection technique.


One sample provides one data point. When appropriate, repeated sampling and review of results over time may provide more useful information about a larger water or process system.


Biotrax can clarify the method, reporting units, and terminology shown on its laboratory report. Treatment, regulatory, public-health, and system-operation decisions should follow the applicable program and qualified authority.
